Malatesta Castle
Piazza Malatesta, 47900 Rimini, Italy
Description:
The small provincial town of Rimini is world famous for Malatesta Castle. The castle was both a fortress, with fortified walls surrounded by a deep moat, and a palace at the same time. The founder of the castle, Pandolfo Malatesto, began construction in 1437 on the hill of the city, opposite Cavour Square.
The castle was built as a defensive fortification, which housed a garrison, courtyard and the prince's chambers. The walls of the nobleman’s rooms were decorated with colorful frescoes, tapestries and paintings.
The fortress walls with massive square towers have an impressive appearance, and the ruler’s coat of arms is placed above the central entrance to the castle. Today’s castle is a place popular to visit by numerous tourists.
