Siena

Plaza del Campo

Siena, Tuscany, Italy

Description:

Piazza del Campo is one of the most magnificent medieval squares located in the city of Siena, Italy. It overlooks the facades of famous buildings - Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Manja, which are its architectural dominant.

In 1327-1349, the square was paved with red travertine and brick so that the nine sectors spreading from the Palace of the Commune symbolized the government of Nine. The structure and contours of the square did not arise by chance. For many years, the Siena government passed laws that were aimed at leveling its perimeter and unifying the facades of palaces.

Until the end of the Council of Twenty-Four, the square was used for markets and fairs. At that time, it had not yet acquired the form it has now, but even then they wanted to use the space of the square not only for shopping shops, but for various meetings of citizens and all sorts of national holidays. Nowadays, Piazza del Campo is very popular among tourists, twice a year along its perimeter, the famous horse races (Palio) are held.
