Captain's Palace
Piazza dei Signori, Verona, Italy
Description:
The building, known as the Palace of Consignorio or the Palace of Captains, among others forming the form of the ancient Piazza Signori, got its name due to the fact that it was here that the "captains of the city" - governors sent by Venice to govern Verona since the XVI century were located. But it was built much earlier - in 1363 by order of the ruler of Verona from the Scaliger family - Cansignorio della Scala and originally was a fortress with four corner towers and a fortress wall surrounding the courtyard.
Since the XVI century, the palace has been rebuilt many times, losing three of its towers. During the period of Austrian rule, the court was located in the building, adding another one to the list of its names - the Palace of the Tribunal. In 1882, Cansignorio Palace was rebuilt and the city prison was housed in the remaining tower.
