Square Bra

Piazza Bra, Verona, Italy

Description:

Square Bra is the historical center of the city of Verona. It is famous for the Arena, it is one of the largest amphitheaters of ancient Rome. Only the Colosseum can compete with the Arena in size.

The arena was built in the 1st century BC, but is very well preserved and is now used as an opera stage. There are also exhibitions at the Arena.

The famous amphitheater is adjacent to the church of San Nicola.

The entrance to the square is opened by the Portoni Della Bra gate. These are jagged marble arches built in the fifteenth century. They form part of the city walls. The name of the square came from the word "braida", which in Lombard means "wide".

The western edge of the square is occupied by "Liston" - a walking wide sidewalk. Near the palaces of Liston is the Philharmonic Academy - a significant architectural structure.

Piazza Bra is surrounded by facades made in different styles, and in the center of it is a square, there you can see the fountain of the Alps, a monument in honor of Italian partisans and a huge equestrian monument to King Victor Emmanuel II.
