Vecchio Castle

Corso Castelvecchio, 2, 37121 Verona, Italy

Description:

Vecchio Castle, aka Castelvecchio, is a real castle from the Middle Ages. It was created as a fortification by the Scaligeri family when they questioned the loyalty of the citizens. But that didn't save them. Throughout history, many rulers changed in Verona - the Visconti were replaced by Scaligeri, and then came the periods of rule of Venice, Naples and Austria. All this time, Vecchio Castle was the residence of the rulers, while at the same time it included the functions of a military barracks and an arms warehouse.

The walls of the castle are reinforced by six watchtowers, its courtyard has a square shape. The red bricks of which the castle is made include parts of the city walls of ancient Rome. Around the castle dug a ditch, which in the old days was filled with water.

Since 1923, the castle has been a city museum. Behind its walls is an art gallery, luxury items from the early Christian period and many other priceless relics, including the 15th-century Madonna collection.
