Beit Shearim National Park
Description:
Beit Shearim was once a wealthy Jewish city and religious center. Only well-preserved tombs have survived from the city. They were hollowed out in caves, which was not cheap. It speaks to the wealth of the city and society. Famous citizens, rich Palestinians, sages considered it their duty to be buried in these caves. The sarcophagi were decorated with magnificent rich carvings. Numerous inscriptions in Greek testify to the Greco-Roman influence on the city.
In our time on the site of the ancient necropolis is a national park.
In 2002, the site of the ancient city was nominated for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
