Mount Phnom Kulen - Lake Tonle Sap

Mount Phnom Kulen is a popular destination for tourists, as well as a favorite holiday destination for the Khmers themselves.
It is believed that this is where the history of the formation of the great Khmer Empire begins. In 802 A.D., at the summit of Phnom Kulen, Jayavarman II instructed a brahman priest named Hiranyadama to perform a religious rite of Devaraja cult over him, after which Jayavarman II became chakravartin, “the ideal ruler of the universe.”

The rite proclaimed him the supreme ruler of the lands, which helped him to unite the country.

Tonle Sap Lake

The blue heart of Cambodia, as it is sometimes poetically called, is never blue. Hundreds of thousands of tons of silt and red-brown soil make its coast murky brown. Either the diminishing water will cause you to drag your nets and boats for miles, or the increasing water will flood your home. The peculiarities of the lake are such that it is impossible to build a house on the golden middle. The idea was to build houses on water.
