Mangystau region, about 170 km northeast of Aktau, near the village of Shetpe

Description:

Mount Sherkala: the most photogenic "Yurta-Lev" and the symbol of Mangystau

Discover Mount Sherkala - the legendary natural symbol of Mangystau, which not only meets, but accompanies you with a look at many kilometers. This solitary guardian rock with the perfect shape of a yurt and the profile of a sleeping lion is a must-see icon of any trip to West Kazakhstan.

Why is Sherkala a must-visit for every tourist in Mangystau?

  • Perfect shape and double image: Sherkala is famous for its unique, almost man-made shape. On the one hand it is a giant yurt of limestone, on the other – a profile of a mighty lying lion. This striking optical effect makes it one of the most photogenic objects in Kazakhstan.

  • Best sunset in the region: Evening light at the foot of Sherkala is a world-class spectacle. The soft slopes of the mountain at sunset are painted in gold, pink and scarlet tones, literally glowing from the inside, which creates unique conditions for landscape and travel photography.

  • Living landmark of the Great Silk Road: Standing at its foot, you touch history. Sherkala for centuries served as the main navigational sign for merchant caravans and nomads, as ancient legends say. You can go around it, looking at the traces of wind erosion and looking for the entrances to the mysterious grottoes.

  • The heart of the classic route: Sherkala is located in the epicenter of the main attractions: nearby are the colored sands of Kokkala, the Torysh tract and canyons, which allows you to visit several unique locations in one trip, creating a rich and diverse route.

Practical information for visiting:

  • Location: Mangystau region, about 170 km northeast of Aktau, near the village of Shetpe.

  • Coordinates for Yandex.Maps: Latitude: 44.190000, Longitude: 52.08500

  • How to get there: From Aktau or the village of Shetpe it is necessary to move along the steppe dirt road. The road is passable for an SUV or a car with high clearance. For the first visit, a guided tour is recommended, which will show the best angles for photos.

  • Best time to visit: All year round, but most comfortable - in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). The absolute best time of day is 1.5-2 hours before sunset and sunset itself to catch the magical transformation of the mountain. Early morning is also great for shooting.

  • What to take with you: A camera with a wide-angle and zoom lens (for shooting the image of a “lion”), comfortable shoes for walking along the rocky steppe, a headdress, a supply of water. For a special experience, you can take a mat and tea to meet the sunset in the most epic place of Mangystau.

Sherkala is more than a mountain. It's the calling card and the soul of the land. It does not require you to climb, it invites you to stop, reflect and become part of a landscape that remembers the caravans of the past and meets the travelers of the present.
