Kokkala
Description:
Kokkala: Blue Jurassic Castle in the Heart of Mangystau
Discover Kokkalu - a unique geological wonder of Mangystau, where time painted the palette of the ancient ocean. This is not just a canyon, but a real “Blue Fortress” (as its name is translated), composed of colorful clays and limestones over 170 million years old. Here you can walk along the bottom of the disappeared Jurassic Sea and find the imprints of ancient life.
Why is Kokkala a unique must-visit for tourists?
Traveling 170 million years ago: Put your hand on the fossilized prints of fern leaves and Jurassic tree twigs, or consider layers of ancient charcoal. This is a rare opportunity to touch the age of dinosaurs, where each layer of rock is a page of the geological record.
Fantastic palette of the Blue Fortress: In the rays of the sun, the slopes come to life, overflowing with delicate bluish, gray-green and sand shades. The soft, streamlined shapes of the hills and narrow passageways make it feel like you’re inside a huge abstract painting or a fairytale clay castle.
Paradise for photographers and lovers of leisurely walks: Unlike the majestic canyons, Kokkala fascinates with its intimacy and comfort. Ideal conditions for landscape, artistic and macro photography: bizarre layered textures, play of light on colored slopes and miniature natural arches.
The perfect stop on the route: Kokkala is located within walking distance of the legendary Sherkala Mountain, which allows you to see two contrasting and absolutely unique natural wonders of Mangystau in one day, creating a rich and diverse route.
Practical information for visiting:
Location: Mangystau region, about 170 km from Aktau, near the foot of Sherkala Mountain. The nearest landmark is the village of Shetpe.
Coordinates for Yandex.Maps: Latitude: 44.201944, Longitude: 52.06083
How to get there: From Aktau or the village of Shetpe it is necessary to move along the steppe off-road in the direction of Mount Sherkala. An SUV is a must. For the first visit, it is recommended to hire a guide who will accurately lead you to the most picturesque points.
Best time to visit: Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for walking. The most juicy colors and soft light for photos are in the morning and at sunset. Avoid visiting after heavy rains as clay soils become impassable.
What to bring with you: Comfortable trekking shoes, water supply, sun protection. For photography – polarization filter, which will increase the color saturation of blue and green layers. Handle fragile rocks carefully: do not dig or break the layers in search of fossils.
Kokkala is a place for connoisseurs of subtle beauty, geology and solitude. It offers an intimate dialogue with the ancient planet and gives the feeling that you are the first explorer to set foot in this magical, colorful fortress of time.
