Mangystau region, Ustyurt plateau, about 350 km northwest of Aktau.

Description:

Balayuk cave: immersion in the underground kingdom of Ustyurt

Discover the Balayuk cave - one of the most mysterious and grandiose karst wonders of Kazakhstan, hidden in the depths of the Ustyurt plateau. This is not just a cave, but a whole underground world with giant halls and a mysterious lake, inviting real explorers to make a trip to the bowels of the earth.

Why is Balayuk Cave a unique challenge for a tourist explorer?

  • Descent into the underground cathedral: You will enter one of the largest caves in the region, whose depth reaches 120 meters. Three extensive halls, connected by steep corridors, amaze with scale and acoustics, creating a feeling of being in a natural Gothic cathedral.

  • The main pearl of the cave is a unique underground lake 20 meters long. Its crystal clear, emerald water retains a temperature of +10-13 ° C all year round and, reflecting the light of the lanterns, creates the effect of a magical glowing mirror in complete darkness - a spectacle that cannot be forgotten.

  • A real speleological expedition: A visit to Balayuk is a full-fledged adventure that requires basic physical training. Descents at an angle of 40-70 degrees, uneven floor and complete darkness will make you feel like a true discoverer. This is a place for those who are looking for an unusual, adrenaline experience.

  • Key point of the expedition to Ustyurt: The cave perfectly complements the route of exploring the wildest corners of Mangystau, being next to the grand Karynzharyk depression and the Kenderley salt marshes. This allows one expedition to see both underground and above-ground wonders of the plateau.

Practical information for the expedition:

  • Location: Mangystau region, Ustyurt plateau, about 350 km northwest of Aktau.

  • Coordinates for Yandex. Map (guidance at the entrance): Latitude: 43.954444, Longitude: 52.43388

  • How to get there and conditions of visit:

    • The path is extremely difficult and passes through the absolute off-road Ustyurt plateau. A caravan of at least 2 all-wheel drive SUVs with experienced drivers-conductors is required.

    • To descend into the cave, special equipment is needed: reliable climbing or speleological ropes, insurance systems, helmets and powerful headlights (1 per person). Regular clothes and flashlights on the phone are unacceptable.

    • A visit is possible only as part of an organized group with a professional caver guide who will ensure safety and has all the necessary equipment.

  • Best time to visit: May-June and September, when there is no extreme summer heat on the surface and less chance of rain. Visiting in winter is dangerous due to the cold and possible icing of the descents.

  • What to bring with you: In addition to the special equipment issued by the guide, you must: durable trekking shoes with an aggressive tread, warm unsweetened clothes (even in summer it is cold in the cave), gloves, water supply and high-calorie dry rations.

Balayuk Cave is a level of complexity and experience for trained adventurers. It rewards courage with incredible views of subterranean voids and a sense of belonging to the mysteries of the planet that are accessible to only a few.
