Description:

Shakpak-Ata: the sacred cross in the rock and the door to the millennia of Mangyshlak

Discover Shakpak-Ata – one of the oldest and most mysterious spiritual centers of Eurasia, carved into a rock on the shore of the Caspian Sea. It is not just an underground mosque, but a unique architectural manifesto where Islamic tradition meets the cosmology of ancient nomads, creating a place of incredible power and knowledge.

Why is Shakpak Ata a unique pearl of world heritage?

  • The only cruciform underground mosque in the world (X-XIII centuries): You will enter a mosque whose plan is shaped like a cross, a unique architectural phenomenon in the Islamic world. In the center, the four columns symbolize the elements of the universe: fire, water, earth and air, turning space into a model of the universe.

  • The Stone Chronicle from the Paleolithic to the Present: The Complex is a real time machine. The necropolis nearby testifies to a continuous sacred tradition from the Neolithic era. You will see ancient petroglyphs, the symbol of the hand “hamsa” and Arabic inscriptions layered on top of each other.

  • Place of Power and Legendary Healer: According to legend, Saint Shakpak-Ata lived here, who had the gift of healing. Deep wells with healing water and the special atmosphere of the cave still attract pilgrims who believe in the power of this place.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Candidate: Shakpak-Ata is on UNESCO’s provisional list, highlighting its outstanding universal value. You will visit the object, which is the property not only of Kazakhstan, but of all mankind.
