Torysh Tract

Mangystau region, about 20 km east of Shetpe village

Description:

Torysh tract: mysterious valley of stone balls Mangystau

Discover the Torysh tract - one of the most inexplicable and fascinating anomalies of the planet, where hundreds of ideal stone spheres are scattered along the bottom of the ancient sea. It’s a place where geology turns into a fantastic art, and you become an explorer of a mystery that scientists still struggle with.

Why is Torysh a unique miracle for an inquisitive traveler?

  • The natural mystery of the Stone Balls: You will find yourself among hundreds of perfectly round and oval stone nodules, as if specially scattered by a giant. Their origin is not fully understood, making each sphere a mystery and an object for surprise and photography.

  • Museum of spherical forms in the open air: The diameter of the balls is from a few centimeters to 4 meters! Some are split, exposing a crystalline structure inside, resembling a cut of a geode. This is a rare opportunity to see and touch such unique geological formations.

  • A walk on the Tethys ocean floor: Each sphere is a time capsule formed at the bottom of an ancient sea. Wandering among them, you literally walk on the petrified seabed, exploring the result of millions of years of mineralization.

  • Surreal photos in the “alien” landscape: The contrast of ideal spheres against the background of a flat steppe creates surreal, “alien” landscapes. This place is a dream for photographers looking for unique compositions and textures, especially in the rays of low sunrise or sunset.

Practical information for visiting:

  • Location: Mangystau region, about 20 km east of Shetpe village.

  • Coordinates for Yandex. Map (central part of tract): Latitude: 44.258333, Longitude: 52.13888

  • How to get there: From Aktau or the village of Shetpe it is necessary to turn from the main highway to the dirt road. To get directly to the ball field, you will need an SUV or a car with a very high clearance, since there is no road.

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when there is no exhausting heat. For the best photos with long shadows, come early in the morning or before sunset.

  • What to take and the rules of conduct: Comfortable shoes, headdress, water. Most importantly, it is a fragile natural phenomenon. It is strictly forbidden to split, roll, paint or try to take the balls away. It is possible to touch and photograph, but it is necessary to preserve this miracle for future generations.

Torysh is a place for a thoughtful explorer and connoisseur of natural wonders. It does not strike with scale, like canyons, but fascinates with details and a sense of contact with the unsolved mystery of our planet, leaving the feeling that you have visited a real natural museum of sculptures.
