Kykkos – the heart of Cyprus shrines
Description:
Wherever you go, you will see many churches and monasteries. Because history, religion, traditions and culture are inseparable. Today we are going to the Orthodox places of Cyprus.
Kykki Monastery is a large, rich, beautiful and saturated with Christian relics: particles of the relics of the Apostles Luke, Peter, Barnabas, Nicholas the Pleasant, George the Victorious and other saints, miraculous icons.
It is located in the Troodos Mountains at an altitude of 1140 meters, founded in the 11th century. It contains the largest shrine - the miraculous Icon of the Virgin, written by the Apostle Luke during the earthly life of the Virgin herself. She looked at the icon and said, “My mercy and the one born of me with this icon will abide.”
Then we come to the church of Saints Cyprian and Ustiny. Interesting legend about them. Cyprian was a powerful sorcerer. Once asked his young man to bewitch the beautiful Ustinia. She lived in a pagan family, but accidentally heard about Jesus Christ and believed in him. And she converted her parents to Christianity. When Cyprian threw demons at her, the magic did not work.
The intrigued Cyprian went to Ustinya and she told him about Jesus. Cyprian was baptized. And today we are going to the church built in their honor, to pray from damage and evil eye. The priest reads a prayer service, which is addressed to the holy martyrs and has great power against demons. We are purified and filled with bright thoughts.
In the same church there is also a miraculous icon of the Holy Mother of God, who is prayed for the birth and health of children. And the icon of Andronikos and Athanasia, who were an example of a pious married couple, are addressed with a request to create and preserve a family.
Finally, we arrive at the village of Kalopanayotis. It is famous for the monastery of John Lampadista with frescoes of the 12th-15th centuries, protected by UNESCO, as well as healing springs, Venetian bridges and mountain streets with black houses. Why are the houses black? You will.
In the meantime, we walk through the village, along the river, where the apostles Mark and Barnabas baptized Heraclidius, who became the first bishop of these places. Or go to the museum with unique icons. Today is full of Christian values. Do you want to change your life with God’s help? Sign up!
