Tung Chung Fortress
Tung Chung Rd, Lantau Island, Hong Kong, from Tung Chung MTR station
Description:
Tung Chung Fortress was built to house three hundred soldiers on the shore of the island, where there were constant clashes with pirates. After 3 years of peace, the soldiers were withdrawn, but the fortifications remained, so during the Qing Dynasty, many pirates chose this bay and used the fortress as their base.
During World War II, the fort was occupied by Japanese troops. Since then, there are 6 muzzle-loading guns standing on a cement basis and granite blocks with an area of 70 by 80 meters. And on the arched gateways there are still ancient Chinese inscriptions.
Later, the Tung Chung fortress underwent several transformations: it was the headquarters of the police, and then Wa Ing College.
