City park behind the wall
Description:
The walled Kowloon area was once densely populated, and development was predominantly illegal. Originally built as a military fort, it became an enclave in 1898, when new territories were leased by Britain. During World War II, after the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the population increased dramatically. By 1987, this fortress city had 33,000 inhabitants, amazingly living on an area of only 6.5 acres. By this time, there was almost complete chaos in the area, drug addiction, prostitution and other vicious phenomena flourished.
In January 1987, Hong Kong authorities decided to demolish the slums, which was started in March 1993. Two years later, the City Park was opened here, stretching on the territory of the former fortress, which preserved some historical relics and ruins of architectural monuments.
The area of the park is 31,000 square meters and covers eight picturesque thematic areas, each of which is designed according to an individual plan. Now visitors enjoy walking along picturesque flower alleys and beautiful landscape architecture in traditional Chinese style.
