Po Lin Monastery
Description:
One of the most famous Buddhist monasteries in Hong Kong. It is located on one of the emerald hills of Lantau Island, at an altitude of 520 meters.
The monastery was built in 1906 by three monks and was initially quite small. However, by 1924, it was significantly expanded, new premises appeared. At the same time, the monastery received its current name - Po Lin, which means "precious lotus".
Today, Po Lin includes several buildings. Particularly impressive is the main temple with a magnificently decorated prayer hall. The temple is richly decorated with colorful frescoes, stone carvings, wooden sculptures and gilded Buddha statues.
The main attraction of the monastery is a 34-meter bronze statue of the seated Buddha Tian Tau. It is the largest Buddha statue in China and in the world that is outdoors. The statue can be seen from afar, but to get very close to it, you need to climb the stairs of 268 steps.
