Western Market Market Market

Western Market, 323 Des Voeux Road Central, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Description:

Initially, Western Market consisted of two separate blocks: the South, which was demolished, and the North. The surviving block is more compact than the destroyed one, so it has been preserved and restored.

The market is a four-story building built in the style of King Edward, which was popular in England from 1901 to 1918. Red-brown brick alternates with white brick masonry on the tops of the towers. This building was built in 1906 as an extension of the then existing Western Market.

It worked as a food market until 1988, when it was declared a historical monument. However, in 1991 it was repaired and again began to be used for its intended purpose.

Currently on the market you can find such departments: bakery in the Bavarian style, shop of Chinese desserts, souvenir shops. On the ground floor there is a wide selection of fabrics and cafes. On the top floor there is a restaurant with a banquet hall where live music plays.
