Plover Cove Reservoir

Tai Mei Tuk, Hong Kong, China

Description:

The Plover Cove Reservoir is the first reservoir in the world to be at sea. It is the largest in Hong Kong by territory and the second largest by volume.

The construction of the reservoir was caused by a sharp increase in population in the 1950s. Demand for water increased, but there was no free land to build a new reservoir. Former water director Morgan came up with the idea to turn the bay into a reservoir.

Construction work began in 1960 and ended in 1968.

The reservoir was built in a very unusual way. Sea water was pumped out of the tank and filled with fresh water. The reservoir dam is one of the largest dams in the world. It was erected at the mouth of a large bay. The height of the dam reaches 28 meters. It can store 230 million cubic meters of water.

More and more reservoir attracts water sports fans, tourists and just want to relax and walk.
