Anti-British memorial to the victims of Sanyuanli
No.34 Guangyuan Middle Road, Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China
Description:
The anti-British memorial to the victims of Sanyuanli, erected on 1 October 1950 near the village of Sanyuanli, was founded in honor of villagers who fought against British imperialism.
After the outbreak of the Opium War with China in 1840, British troops sacked women and children and plundered the Sanyuanli area. The remaining 103 villagers were able to gather thousands of volunteers and attack the British garrison.
As a result, after a whole day of fierce fighting, more than 200 people of the British army died and Sanyuanli's men won a complete victory.
The monument is a high stone plaque with the inscription: “In memory of the event of 1841 – to the people who opposed British imperialism and the martyrs of Sanyuanli!”
