Sacred Heart Church in Guangzhou

333 Yide Road in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, China

Description:

The Church of the Sacred Heart in Guangzhou is one of the undisputed sights of Guangzhou. It is the largest Gothic cathedral not only in China but throughout Southeast Asia.

The church, although more correctly called a cathedral, was built in the early nineteenth century by the Catholic Church with the approval and under the personal supervision of the Emperor of France. In architecture, there is a European influence: spires, openwork pointed arches, stained glass windows, high vaults put this building on a par with the Gothic cathedrals of Europe.

A large church building with two towers is built of powerful granite blocks. The total area of the building is 2754 square meters, it is about 35 meters wide and 79 meters long. One of the towers has a clock, the other is a bell tower, the bells for which were also brought from France in the XIX century. The interior is painted in warm bright colors.
