Temple of the Five Immortals

Yuexiu, Guangzhou, China

Description:

The Temple of the Five Immortals is a Taoist temple founded in 1377 to honor five divine beings who descended into the city during the Zhou Dynasty. It is located on the place where, according to legend, one of the creatures left its mark in the stone.

According to legend, three men and two women descended from the sky, bringing with them rice and valuable knowledge of growing crops to help the citizens escape hunger.

Inside the temple is a large stone sculpture of the five immortals. Next to it stands a five-ton bronze bell, which for several centuries people rang in case of alarm and danger.
