Two days of excursion in Luoyang
Description:
Day 1: Excursion programme:
Shaolin Monastery and Talin Pagoda Forest (performance by Wushu masters). The Shaolin Temple, with its more than a thousand-year history, was built during the Tang dynasty and declared a key national Buddhist monastery in 1983. It is the birthplace of the famous Shaolin Martial Art and one of the schools of Chinese Buddhism. Being one of the main attractions of China, the temple is located opposite the peak of Wuru, surrounded by lush vegetation and pointed mountains. Thanks to this location, the temple received its name - Shao from Mount Shaoshi, at the foot of which it is located, and Lin in Chinese means forest. During its long history, the temple has been repeatedly reconstructed, thanks to which its architecture is very original and includes elements of architectural styles of 11 eras. In addition, it is included in the list of monuments of world cultural heritage under the protection of UNESCO.
Day 2: Excursion program:
Longmen Caves. The main attraction of Luoyang was due to the Indian tradition of carving out of the rock whole complexes of cave temples. It was believed that this act improves karma and promotes a better rebirth in the next life. With the advent of Buddhism, China adopted this custom in China. Especially popular carving of Buddhas and bodhisattvas from stone became since the Northern Wei dynasty, when after the poisoning of the persecutor of Buddhism Emperor Toba Tao and the ensuing turmoil, his grandson Toba Jun (ruled from 452 to 465) saw in everything that happened a sign from above and therefore began to support Buddhists and ordered to make cave temples.
Baimasa Temple. In 64, during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220), the Ming Emperor sent his delegation west to study the then growing popularity of Buddhism. Three years later, the delegation returned with two prominent Indian monks, She Moten and Zhu Falan. They brought a white horse carrying Buddhist sutras and Buddhist sculptures on its back. This was the first appearance of Buddhism in China. To express his gratitude to the two monks and their white horse, the emperor ordered the construction of a monastery, which he called the White Horse Temple. The monks stayed in the temple to translate the sutras. Later, this Chinese sutra “42 chapters” attracted many monks and made the temple the center of Buddhist activity in China. It is for this reason that the temple is revered as the “House of the Founder” and the “cradle of Buddhism” of China.
