The Dragon Gate Grotto

Longmen Grottoes, Yingcai Road, Luolong, Luoyang, Henan, China

Description:

The Dragon Gate is one of the largest temple ensembles in China. The construction of this cave temple began around 494. For four centuries, numerous artisans and monks cut down new stone statues and reliefs right in the rocks. More than 2,100 kyotes, 43 pagodas have survived, as well as over 100,000 Buddha images and 3,600 stone-carved inscriptions. The largest statue of the complex is a 17-meter image of Buddha in the cave of Fengxiansa.

Magnificent and striking in its grandeur cave "Dragon's Gate", literally dotted with countless statues of Buddha are a unique example of art. They became a real symbol of the high skill and wealth of the people who once lived in Luoyang, as well as their religiosity. The name of the grottoes is due to the fact that the two mountains resemble the shape of the gate through which the river flows. This landscape appeared to the eye of the emperor of the Sui dynasty when he looked out the windows of his palace.

Longmen Caves are included in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. Numerous travelers here are attracted not only by caves with statues, but also by picturesque mountains with gorges, springs, waterfalls, overgrown green pine trees and cypress slopes. Near the entrance to one of the caves hits a hot spring.
