White Pagoda in the Miaoying Temple
No.171 Fuchengmennei Main Street, in Miaoying Temple, Xicheng District, Beijing, China
Description:
The White Pagoda in the Miaoying Temple is the largest and oldest surviving Lamaist Pagoda in China. It was built by Nepalese architect Anika in 1271 during the Yuan Dynasty. The pagoda is located in the center of the temple. It is called white because of the color of the walls painted with white lime. Its height is 50.9 meters. The pagoda consists of three parts: a pedestal, the main part in the form of an inverted bowl and a spire. The base of the spire is shaped like a lotus flower. At the top of the spire is a large bronze canopy, along the edges of which are statues of Buddha and the bell. From the ground it resembles a huge umbrella with fringe. In 1961, the White Pagoda was inscribed on the National Cultural Heritage List of China.
