Huangsi Temple

Huangsi Main Street, Chaoyang District, Beijing, China

Description:

The Temple of Huangsi or, as it is also called, the Yellow Temple is a Buddhist temple complex consisting of two structurally identical halls. It is located about three kilometers from the center of Beijing. The temple got its name because of the yellow glazed tiles covering the roof.

The temple complex is divided into eastern and western temples. Structurally, they are identical and differ from each other only by interiors. The Eastern Yellow Temple, known as the Temple of Universal Purity, was built in 1651 for the living Naomuhan Buddha. The Western Yellow Temple, built a year after the Eastern Temple, is called the Dalai Lama Temple. It served as the residence of the Fifth Dalai Lama. The Huangsi Temple has been renovated and rebuilt with new pagodas and Buddha statues.
