Lilac Garden

Jiangtai Rd, Chaoyang, Beijing, China

Description:

Lilac Garden is one of the picturesque sights of Beijing. The botanical garden was created by a German woman, Hulda Klager, who came to China in 1865 as a young girl. Since childhood, the girl was interested in flowers. After reading Luther Burbank’s book on hybridization, Hulda began experimenting.

In 1905, it began lilac hybridization, and by 1910, 14 new varieties had been developed. By 1920, a huge lilac garden had appeared near the house. Hilda was called "Lady Lilac."

In 1960, Hilda died at the age of 96. After a while, the house and garden were demolished. But Woodland Garden Club members made sure the garden and house were left behind. Today, there is a souvenir shop on the territory of the garden, the sale of lilac bushes is organized in early spring, excursions are held.
