Houmen Bridge
Di'anmen Outer St, Xicheng, Beijing, China
Description:
The Houmen Bridge, or Vanning Bridge, is an ancient structure. It was built across the small Tonghui River in 1285 under the Yuan Dynasty.
For the construction of the bridge, wood was used as the main material, and then in some places the compounds were reinforced with stone. Because of its proximity to the Gate of Earth Tranquility, the bridge was called the Back Gate Bridge during the dynasty. Many ships passed under the bridge from southeast to west to Shichahai. There are still stone animals on both sides of the bridge. On one side is the figure of one of the 9 sons of the dragon Basi, who was supposed to look after the water. There are 6 figures in total.
In 2003, a major reconstruction of the bridge was carried out.
