Nanhu Island

Inside Summer Palace, Haidian District, Beijing, China

Description:

Nanhu Island is an artificial island in the southeastern part of Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace. Its area is just over one hectare. When Emperor Qianlong decided to expand Kunming Lake, he ordered workers to keep the temples and other buildings on its shore. And that part of the land was left untouched. So Nanhu Island came into being.

Its main attractions are the Hanxu Hall, the Dragon King Temple, the Hanxu Hall-style pavilion, and, of course, the 17-arched stone bridge that connects the island to the shore and resembles a huge turtle in its appearance.
