Waitan Embankment

nab. Waitan, Shanghai, China

Description:

Vaitan is one of the symbols of Shanghai, also known as the “architectural fair of ten thousand countries”. And it is true that the atmosphere of other states is felt here as probably nowhere else in the city. The word "vaitan" in translation means "outer shore". Here, on the banks of the Huangpu River, there are several dozen European buildings of the colonial period - former banks and trading companies.

On a plot of one and a half kilometers there are 52 buildings of various architectural styles, among which there are classicism, Gothic, Neoclassicism, Baroque and Art Deco. As for Art Deco, Shanghai has the right to claim the title of one of the richest collections of buildings in the world in this style.

Due to this architectural diversity, the Vaitan embankment is often called the “museum of world architecture”. The city has banned high-rise construction in the area in order to preserve historical monuments and the landscape in which they are inscribed.

Vaitan embankment is one of the most popular and famous tourist areas in Shanghai. It is especially beautiful in the evening, when it is illuminated by hundreds of colorful lights.
