People's Square
People's Square, Huang Pu Qu, Shanghai, China
Description:
People’s Square, which is one of the most important transport hubs of the city and a real socio-political center of Shanghai, is located on the site of the former hippodrome. Once there were horse races, and now tourists are attracted here by well-groomed green lawns, ponds, cozy benches. In the park part of the square you can enjoy all the charms of the Shanghai spring, read a book, launch a kite into the sky or walk with your loved one. It's especially crowded during rush hours.
One of the central attractions of People's Square is the Shanghai Museum - the best in the country. It houses an extensive collection of works of art and historical relics. The collection is one of the largest in China and is second only to the capital expositions. In 14 galleries of the museum there are collections of sculptures, paintings, calligraphic works, furniture, antique coins, ceramics, bronze and jade products, ancient seals, as well as ethnographic finds characteristic of the life of national minorities. The difference between the exposition of the Shanghai Museum is in principle the presentation of objects: they are exhibited by thematic sections, not by chronology. This approach makes it possible to trace the development of the culture of the region.
The former Jockey Club building houses the Shanghai Art Gallery, which offers visitors an extensive collection of artworks by Chinese and foreign masters.
