Shanghai Confucian Temple
No.215 Wenmiao Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China
Description:
Shanghai Confucian temple (Chinese call it Wen Miao) was founded in the XIII century during the Yun dynasty and was a prestigious educational institution, previously in China was a typical combination of temple and school.
Now the temple complex consists of three parallel paths, located from south to north - the first path for worship and sacrifice, the second for the study and knowledge of life, the third for self-knowledge. The paths begin at the main gate, made of gray stone and decorated with lions, a traditional entrance in Confucian temples.
Next is a sculpture of a sitting Confucius surrounded by bells.
In the center of the complex is a large building in the form of a pagoda, which previously served as a library, and now a stone museum is founded here.
Nearby is the temple itself - this building is about 20 meters high, having a three-tiered pagoda and located in a small garden. Opposite is a small pond with a fountain and a building that houses a museum of Chinese porcelain kettles.
Every year on September 28, Confucius’ birthday, prayers and ceremonies are held here.
