Fortress San Felipe

Cartagena, Colombia.

Description:

The fortress of San Felipe was built in the XII century by Spanish conquistodores to protect the captured city of Cartagena.

In Cartagena there was a huge number of riches belonging to the Spanish King Ferdinand, as it was the main port. In the XV century, the city suffered from numerous attacks by pirates, so, in 1586, the pirate Drake, under the auspices of the British government, completely defeated and plundered the city. Therefore, it was decided to build the fortress of San Felipe, for the construction of which it took about 200 years and 245 million gold.

By the XVII century, San Felipe was the largest fortress in the Spanish colonies. It was like a labyrinth, from which only the inhabitants of the fortress could get out. San Felipe towered on the slope and it was almost impossible to approach it.

In 1741, the fortress withstood a two-month siege by British troops who were unable to capture it.
