Cartagena (Col)

Fortress of San Felipe de Barajas

San Lazaro Hill, Cartagena, Colombia

Description:

The fortress is located on the hill of San Lazaro - a strategically important place on the approaches to Cartagena. The fortress was built by the Spaniards during the colonial era. Its construction began in 1536. In 1657 the fortress was greatly expanded. The fortress is built of gray stone blocks. The walls, wide at the base and narrowing to the top, give the whole fortress a formidable appearance (even somewhat gloomy).

The main fortress is the castle, which has a complex labyrinth of tunnels. The castle is very well preserved. Since 1990, it has been used as a venue for social and cultural events.

In 1984 UNESCO listed the fortress as a world cultural heritage of mankind.
