Park Cespedes
Cuba, Santiago de Cuba, central part of the city
Description:
Today, Cespedes Park is one of the busiest places in the city, where citizens of all ages and of course tourists like to relax. The area is divided into 4 sectors, in each of which trees grow, benches and fountains are installed. The square is surrounded by a low fence, which is often used instead of benches. In the western part there is a small memorial with a bust of the hero of the struggle for independence of Cuba – Carlos Manuel de Cecepedes.
The square overlooks several famous buildings of Santiago de Cuba: the House of Diego Velázquez, City.
Cathedral (where Diego Velazquez is buried) and City Council. And it was this square that witnessed the most important events for Cuba: this place was the “center of control” of the colony, here the surrender to the United States was officially recognized, and on this square Fidel Castro proclaimed the victory of the revolution.
