Santiago de Cuba

Museum of Piracy History (Fortress of San Pedro de la Roca)

Cuba, Santiago de Cuba, 10 km southwest of the city center, coast at the entrance to the Bay of Santiago

Description:

10 kilometers from the city is the ancient Ford (fortress of Castillo del Morro). It was built in 1590 at an altitude of 60 meters in an inaccessible place. This Spanish fortification served as a defense against raids by enemy troops and pirates. Attention is drawn to the correct shape and symmetry. When the urgent need for protection disappeared, a prison for dangerous criminals began to function in this place. The fortress finally lost its military purpose in the 19th century. It was destroyed several times by earthquakes. Only in 1970 the restoration was announced, and the fortress was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Today, tourists are happy to visit the fortress, as the Piracy Museum operates on its territory. It presents interesting exhibits - personal belongings of pirates, weapons, original ancient maps, models of sea ships.

The history of piracy in the region, the direction of navigation, etc. – this will tell the guide. From the wall of the castle opens a picturesque landscape overlooking the city and the Caribbean Sea. The easiest way to get is by taxi from the city.
