Church and Monastery of St. Francisca
Trinidad, Square Mayor, Hern ndez Echerri, 59
Description:
Church and Monastery of St. Francisca is one of the attractions of the Cuban city of Trinidad. Construction of the monastery was completed in 1813. It received its name in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, a famous saint and ascetic, the founder of the Franciscan Order. In 1850 the monastery was converted into a prison for criminals. The building has been empty since 1920, but after the revolution of the 1950s, most of the buildings were restored. The building now houses the National Museum of the Struggle Against Bandits. The exhibits of the museum are objects reminiscent of the struggle of counter-revolutionaries against Fidel Castro.
The monastery is located at the intersection of Krista and Boca Streets, a few blocks north of Plaza Mayor.
