Riga

Kemeri is a bead of Jurmala's amber necklace.

Description:

Kemeri is part of Jurmala. Kemeri is widely known due to healing hydrogen sulfide springs and therapeutic mud. The unique natural resources of Kemeri have long been used in folk medicine and they were known to doctors at the turn of the 18-19 centuries. In 1938, the first state medical institution with 32 oak baths was opened in Kemeri. This date is considered the basis of the resort.

Kemeri was one of the largest resorts of the Russian Empire. During the First World War, the resort was in the front line and was almost completely destroyed. After the restoration in 1928, Kemeri received the status of a city and in 1929 a new hospital was built. In order to attract foreign tourists, in 1936, according to the project of architect Eugene Laube, a luxurious comfortable boarding house was built, the so-called White Palace, which catered exclusively to wealthy foreigners who came here to entertain. The building was also called the White Ship. International chess tournaments were organized in 1937 and 1938 in order to advertise at the Kemeri Hotel. In Soviet times, the Kemeri sanatorium was located here, which became a health resort of All-Union significance.

Today, Kemeri is reborn again. Work was carried out on the restoration of the resort park, alleys, bridges across Versupite, park pavilions were restored. We will see the most popular hydrogen sulfide source "Lizard", artificially poured "Island of Love" with a stone rotunda, a monument to the founders and first doctors of the resort, the Orthodox Church of Peter and Paul. If possible, go up to the observation deck of the water tower and admire the panorama.
