Kuldiga - breath of antiquity and charm of the city
Description:
Kuldiga is one of the most beautiful cities in Latvia, located in the west of the republic. In 2023, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Kuldiga is like a jewelry box – the narrow streets of the city, the tiled roofs of ancient buildings, the medieval layout seems to take us back centuries. In 1596, one of the residences of the Dukes of Courland was located here and until 1616 the city was the capital of Courland. In Kuldig was born the legendary Duke Yekab. No wonder one of the central streets is decorated with a surreal monument - Duke Yekab passes a temporary portal to return to his hometown on the 400th anniversary of his birth. Near the Town Hall Square is a monument to stage artist Evald Valters, who friendly invites for a cup of tea. It is said that whoever sits next to Valters and drinks a cup of tea will live to be 100 years or longer.
At the confluence of Aleksupite in Venta is the highest waterfall in Latvia, and you will also learn why Kuldiga is called the “Kurzeme Venice”. The pride of Kuldiga falls Ventas Rumba, the widest in Europe. In autumn it is overcome by salmon, which goes to spawn, in winter long icicles hang on it, and in spring hundreds of fishers literally fly through the waterfall. In summer, the waterfall becomes the main place to refresh yourself in the heat. Nearby is the longest brick bridge in Europe.
On the way to Kuldiga we will visit Kandawa and Sabile. The section of road between Kandawa and Sabile for its natural beauty is called "Kurzeme Switzerland". Kurzeme is characterized by oak forests and it is not surprising that the coat of arms of Kandava depicts an acorn with oak leaves. A branch of oak with three acorns symbolizes strength. The traditional drink of citizens is acorn coffee. "Acorn with a Little Artist" will meet you in the city center. Kandava acorn in each object plays a certain role. In the castle - "The Ventricle Knight", by the river - "The Stomach floating in a boat".
Unlike Kandawa, located on the mountain, Sabile is located in the valley of the Abava River. One of the attractions of Sabile is the Wine Mountain. Extensive grape plantations on the slope of the right bank of Abava appeared during the reign of the Livonian Order. Sabel wine was highly valued in all the castles of Kurzeme. During the time of Duke Yekab, strong sour wine of Wine Mountain was highly valued both at the courts of the duchy and in other countries of Europe where it was exported. The vineyard in Sabile entered the Guinness Book of Records as the northernmost vineyard, where grapes are grown in the open air. Sabel wine mountain can be considered a symbol of Sabile. Even the coat of arms of Sabile depicts a brush of grapes.
Also in Sabile, you can visit the puppet courtyard, where more than 300 handmade dolls by a local pensioner and her relatives are collected.
The distance from Riga to Kuldiga is more than 150 km one way.
