Riga

Walk along the Boulevard Ring

Description:

The tour starts from the National Opera House. Chaliapin, Sobinov, Italian star Toti dal Monte (Milan Nightingale), Kypras Petrauskas and many others toured here. In the middle of the 19th century Riga ceased to be a fortress, city fortifications were demolished and a boulevard ring was created - boulevards, parks, the city canal.

During the tour you will see the monuments to Maris Liepa and George Armistead, the famous Nymph fountain in front of the Latvian National Opera and hear the history of the Laima clock, which is the hallmark of the city. You will find out when the Bastion Hill appeared and why one of the pedestrian bridges across the city canal is called the Eighth Wonder.

We will stop at the monument of one of the most prominent writers of Latvia Rudolf Blaumanis. You will see the monument to the last President of the First Independent Republic of Latvia Karlis Ulmanis, learn the history of the current Kronvalda Park, and in front of the building, which once housed the Faculty of Chemistry of the RPI, there is a monument in the form of a molecular model of L- and D-malic acids Paul Valden. In Kronvalda Park you will see a monument to the poet Taras Shevchenko and the medieval scientist Murza Ulugbek.

One of the central parks of Riga is the Esplanade Park, on the site of which there was once a field and a dune of Kubes. Today in the park stands a monument to Janis Rainis and is the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ. We will finish the tour in Verman Park on the site of which until 1813 there was a quagmire. You will find out why the park is called, and you will also see the monument to the Marquis Paulucci. In the park there is a monument to chess player Mikhail Tal, a native of Riga.
