Riga Art Nouveau (jugendstil)

Our tour will begin in the park near the Latvian National Opera, where you will see one of the most beautiful and unusual monuments of Riga and hear about one of the outstanding mayors of Riga - D. Armitstead. His reign is considered the most successful period in the history of Riga. The dazzling districts of Jugendstil, the automobile factory, the pavilions of the Central Market, the Riga Zoo, schools and hospitals - all this is the merit of George Armitstead.

But today we are primarily interested in Riga Modern and therefore our walk will continue in Kronvalda Park towards Alberta Street, where almost every house is fascinating with beauty and deserves a separate story. Sinister sphinxes; masks skewed by the grimace of horror and pain; indifferent gods, looking at us from a height; Atlanteans and light, graceful female figures; inexorable Valkyries and winged lions. Michael Eisenstein’s imagination, ingenuity and skill deserve admiration and it is his creations that attract thousands of tourists to Albert Street. I will tell you about the fate of the architect, the little secrets he resorted to and which became one of the reasons for the abrupt termination of his architectural career.
