Rundal Palace is the former residence of the Dukes of Courland.

Rundal Palace is included in the network of European royal residences, which brings together the most prominent residences of European rulers, including the Palace of Versailles near Paris, the Palace of Sanssouci in Potsdam and the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

Today it is an outstanding monument of Baroque and Rocco art in Latvia. This is the creation of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli - the only one of the residences of sovereigns of the 18th century in the Baltic States. The palace has preserved its originality, authenticity of architecture and luxurious interior decorations. Painting of plafonds and wall paintings were made by two Italian painters - Francesco Martini and Carlo Zucchi, and the decor of the ceiling and walls made of bale - by the brigade of Berlin sculptor Johann Michael Graff. As a result of restoration work that lasted for several decades, the palace ensemble managed to restore the shine of the times of Duke of Courland Ernst Johann Biron, the favorite of Empress Anna Ioanovna. Rundal Palace served as the summer residence of the Dukes of Courland. =

At the end of 1769, E.I.Biron handed control of the Duchy of Courland to his son Peter, who in 1795 abdicated the throne and the Duchy of Courland and Semigal became the province of the Russian Empire. Catherine II presented the Rundal estate to Count Valerian Zubov, from whom it passed into the property of his brother, the last favorite of the Empress, Prince Platon Zubov. After his death in 1822, the widow Fekla Zubova married Count Andrei Shuvalov and Rundal Palace belonged to the Shuvalov family until 1920.

It is also available for viewing the only "French garden" in Latvia in the Baroque style with a rose garden and "Green Theatre", ornamental stalls and fountains.

Upon request and arrangement, you can visit the Bau Castle on the way.
