Riga

Rundal Palace and Bau Castle are outstanding architectural monuments in Zemgal.

Description:

Bau Castle is located in a picturesque place - on a spit near the confluence of the rivers Musa and Memele. Here people from ancient times (according to archaeologists, 3,500 years ago) settled along the banks of the three largest Zemgale rivers - Lielupe, Memele and Musa. Bau Castle was not only a fortification, but also the center of the district, from where Vogt (administrator and judge in the possession of the Order) carried out legal, financial and military functions of management on his site. Rundal Palace is an outstanding monument of Baroque architecture and decorative Rococo art, was built by the famous architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The entire palace ensemble occupies more than 72 hectares, the main part of which is occupied by a hunting park and, stretching south of the palace, a French park. Ernst Biron, the favorite of Empress Anna Ionovna, in 1736 buys a castle near the town of Bauska and turns it into Rundal Palace, known far beyond the borders of Latvia, located in the very center of the country, in Zemgal. The branch of the Riga Motor Museum covers an area of 400 square meters. It exhibits equipment that reflects the history of Latvia and the world in the twentieth century. Agricultural appliances and household appliances are also provided.
