Salaspils Memorial Ensemble.
Description:
The twentieth century left deep scars in the history of Latvia. We must not forget the past.
Let us remember all by name, let us remember our grief,
It's not the dead, it's the living. (Robert Christmas)
The Salaspils Memorial was opened in 1967 on the site of the expanded police prison and labor educational camp (this is how modern historians of Latvia interpret it) from 1941 to 1944. The ensemble of the Salaspils Memorial expresses deep thoughts and feelings. It tells not only about the pain and suffering, but also about the indomitable strength of spirit of the camp prisoners. On the concrete wall is the inscription in Latvian "Aiz šiem vārtiem vaid zeme" (Behind these gates the earth moans). These are words from a poem by Eugene Veveris, who was a prisoner of the camp. On the opening day of the memorial ensemble was turned on by a metronome - a sound device counting time, as a living eternity of indissoluble connection with past days. The ensemble was created under two mottos: “Eternal memory of the fallen” and “People, be vigilant”. On February 7, 2018, a new exhibition dedicated to the history of the Salaspils camp, which you will see, was opened.
After visiting the memorial ensemble, we will visit the Rumbula Forest, the site of the mass shooting during the Second World War. Here you will see the square in the shape of the Star of David, above which rises the menorah - a ritual candlestick.
