Sigulda - Widzeme Switzerland
Description:
Sigulda is one of the most beautiful and picturesque cities of Latvia, located on both banks of the ancient riverbed of the Gauja, it is rightly called "Vidzeme Switzerland". The city is located 50 km from Riga. Sigulda is beautiful at any time of the year: in winter, when everything is covered with a snow blanket, in spring, when lilacs, cherry and apple trees bloom, in summer, when everything is drowned in greenery, but it is especially beautiful in autumn with a scattering of red and yellow leaves.
You will see the Sigulda medieval castle, the construction of which was started by the Order of the Swordsmen, and later the Livonian Order became its owner. You will see Turaida Castle, built on the site of a destroyed wooden fortress of Livs. The castle was an important fortified center of the Archbishop of Riga. Climb the Donjon Tower and see the beautiful panorama that opens to the valley of the Gauja River. You will visit the Gutman Cave, hear the legend of the Turaida Rose, see the Dine Mountain and the Garden of Songs. The discovery of the Dain Mountain took place in 1985, when the 150th anniversary of the birth of folklorist Krisjanis Barons was celebrated. In the memory of the people, this event remained as a great day of folk songs on Mount Dain. See the only bobsled track in the Baltics. If you wish, you can use the cable car that connects both banks of Gauja and enjoy the beauty of the picturesque Gauja Valley.
