Church of St. jana

Jā a iela 7, Rī ga

Description:

The Church of St. John (or John) is an ancient Lutheran church located in the historical center of Riga. This unique architectural monument combines features of several styles.

Initially, a small wooden chapel dedicated to John the Baptist was located on the territory of the Dominican monastery (it was first mentioned in the city chronicles in the XIII century). During the uprising of the townspeople in the XV century, it was destroyed, but after a while a new stone temple was erected in the style of German late Gothic. After the expulsion of the Dominicans from the city, the church remained abandoned for a long time, and then the building was used for household needs.

At the end of the XVI century, the church became the permanent property of the urban Lutheran community, its appearance changed due to the demolition of the dilapidated part of the building and the addition of a new Mannerism style. In 1849, a new bell tower rose above the church, made in neo-Gothic style by the architect Felsko.
