Cathedral of Christ
Description:
Riga Chrybraddestensky Cathedral is a cathedral belonging to the Latvian Orthodox Church.
Riga Cathedral was built in 1876 - 1884 in neo-Byzantine style by architect Robert Pflug. This is a five-domed cathedral with a bell tower brought forward. The artistic design of the interior space (iconostasis and paintings) was performed by Russian painters, professors of the Academy of Arts P. Shamshin, K. Venig and V. Vereshchagin. The parishioners brought icons as a gift, and by the end of the XIX century, 850 items were recorded at one of the descriptions of church property.
In 1918, the church was stopped, the Cathedral was looted and was in a dilapidated state. Archbishop Ioann Pommer, who arrived in Riga during this period, managed to contribute to the preservation and restoration of the cathedral. But in the 60s of the XX century, the authorities again closed the temple, destroyed the murals, and placed institutions of a secular nature in the building. Only in 1991 it was decided to transfer the temple to believers.
In 2000, the temple received a new iconostasis as a gift, and in 2003, the relics of Hieromartyr John Pommer, acquired shortly before that, were transferred to the cathedral.
