Koknes Castle begins its history in 1209, when Bishop Albert issued a decree to build a stone fortress on the site of the former ancient Latvian wooden castle. With this castle, the locals have a very interesting legend, which the guide will gladly share.
After the construction of the fort, this fortification was transferred by the archbishop to its devoted vassal - Rudolf of Yerichova, later this structure changed many more of its owners. The settlement that was located at the castle grew in size and size, so in 1277 it received the status of a city.
Archbishop Johann V of Valenrode, having considered the successful position of the city, hastened in 1398 to take it into his property, which is extremely opposed to the Livonian Order. But, nevertheless, Koknes Castle received the status of the summer residence of the archbishop.
Since the XV century, the fortress has been very modified, many buildings were rebuilt and completed.
The castle during the wars was conquered by Poles, Swedes, Russians. The fortress was badly damaged, but was restored. Today, the well-kept territory of the castle attracts more and more visitors.
