Petrovsky Park (Garden of Viestura)

Located between Hanzas Street, Rupniecibas and Exporta

Description:

Petrovsky Park (modern name - Viestura Garden) is a public garden, the first in the history of Riga. It had this name until 1923.

The creation of the park began in 1721 by the will of Peter the Great. The park was created with the personal participation of the king: he led the planning of the landscape, picked up trees. The garden, designed by P. Jonstein, had the features of a regular French park with ponds, a rose garden and cozy gazebos. In 1880, the regular layout of the park was replaced by a more free - landscape. In the 30s of the XX century, the Alexander Arc de Triomphe (the only monument of this kind in the Baltics) was moved to the park. The park has changed its name and layout more than once, but it has always remained a favorite holiday destination for Riga residents and guests.
