Livu Square
Description:
Livu Square is rightfully considered one of the most famous and beautiful squares of Riga.
It appeared in 1950 and was called "Square at the Philharmonic". In 1974, the square was adapted for recreation, there were paths and a fountain in the heart of the square. The fountain is currently inoperable. The name Livu square received in 2000.
At any time of the year, the square serves as a wonderful place of rest, in summer a cafe opens, in winter a skating rink is flooded. On the square are the buildings of the Small and Big Guild, the Riga Russian Theatre named after Mikhail Chekhov, as well as an interesting building called "Cat House". According to legend, the homeowner Blumer did not get into the Grand Guild and as a revenge placed on his house sculptures of black cats turned tails to the building of the Great Guild. Part of the tiles of the square is made of wavy masonry, as a memory that in the XVI century a navigable river flowed here, through which grain was delivered to the capital.
