Swedish Gate in Riga
Description:
Shchvedsky Gate is a unique architectural monument. The gate, which is more than one century old, is the only one of the eight city gates that have reached us almost in its original form.
There are many legends associated with them, including the origin of the name. The gate was cut in the XVII century, in the Swedish period of the history of Riga. The castle stone was decorated with a relief depicting a lion - a symbol of Sweden.
The building of the Swedish Gate miraculously survived demolition, as over the centuries it has deteriorated significantly. But in 1926, the Society of Architects stood up for the unique monument. During the XX century, the building was reconstructed several times. The Swedish Gate now houses the House of Architects. This is an important cultural point of the city of Riga, where there are exhibition and concert halls, as well as the library of the Society of Architects.
